Greener Living
Greener Living is a challenge that brings together daily function with environmental awareness.
Northern shares the environmental concerns of society and has taken the initiative to "go green" wherever possible to ensure we are protecting the environment for future generations. This includes energy conservation opportunities in all store renovations and construction projects.
In September, 2008, construction was started on a new store in Nain, Newfoundland. The new store's heat reclaim system is significantly more efficient than the previous building’s heat system. As well, the store runs on high efficiency LED and T8 lights and natural light from added windows. These new lights are linked to sensors that turn off excess interior lights during daylight hours.
Northern also supports communities who have elected to ban the use of plastic shopping bags. Northern has supported the communities of Kuujjuaq, Pukatawagan, and Kangiqsujuaq with free reusable shopping bags to help customers adapt to the change.
In addition to Northern's initial support of the community ban of plastic bags, we also offer additional long-range support to the community programs. For each paper bag that is sold to customers, Northern donates a portion of the proceeds back to the community in donations for community causes.
